I find it absolutely mind blowing that during just a 13 year gap in time, “the world” has changed so incredibly much, and mainly negatively. Thirteen years ago, of course I wasn’t allowed to do anything too outrageous, but I definitely had a lot more opportunities to explore and experience the world than my six year old niece has today. It is crucial for a person to be able to escape their “home” boundaries, even at a younger age. By stepping outside of what is known and expected, one is able to see everything that they don’t know. Ultimately, this can contribute to the person having much more successful relationships with other people later on in life. By stepping out of the comfortableness, you are able to see others’ views much more clearly. Not only can you hear and see what other people think and do, but you may develop a more clear understanding of why people do the things they do. By staying sheltered, everything that is not normal to you becomes abnormal, misunderstood, and you may even consider it wrong. In reality, these things are likely to not be abnormal or wrong at all. Despite the country’s seemingly increasing tolerance for the “different,” the next generation of Americans is being forced to stick to what they know. Without even a look at the outside world, how can these kids even begin to know that not only is it okay for others to have different opinions, but it is normal and necessary for others to think differently. In addition to a possible decrease in tolerance, these kids are being denied the knowledge that they should think outside of the box and question everything. Is the world really that bad? Or are we trying to turn America back into what it used to be—a one-sided, racist, ignorant, and standardized nation?
